Kelvin Mayen Vásquez, a 19-year-old, faces charges after allegedly having sex with an 11-year-old girl on multiple occasions in Long Island (NY).
Authorities said yesterday that the alleged illegal encounters took place over the course of more than a year, between March 2021 and May 2022, when the girl was even younger.
the police of Southampton Town, in Suffolk county, identified the suspect by saying that had developed a “romantic interest” in the girlquoted Newsday. It is unclear how they met.
Mayen, a resident of Quiogue, was arrested on May 19 and charged with sexual conduct against a minor and endangering his well-being, among other charges, reported Pix11.
The Southampton Town Police Detective Unit is continuing to investigate the incident and suspects that there may be other victims, in this or other cases. They ask anyone with information to contact them at 631-702-2230.
In July of last year, then-Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a law that raised the minimum age of marriage in New York to 18, effectively banning child marriage.
The “Nalia’s Law” project was named after a teenage girl who was forced into marriage at the age of 13. Previously, in 2017, New York had raised the minimum age for marriage with parental or judicial consent from 14 to 17, she recalled. NBC News.
