Women rip rare ‘penis plants’ from the ground for selfie | Abroad

The government posted the warning on Facebook last Wednesday after a viral video showed women ripping penis plants out of the ground. For minutes you can hear them screaming excitedly as they grab the ground.

Then they laugh and hold the plant to their face, to joke about its size; a woman compares the length of the plant to her little finger.

The Cambodian government cannot appreciate the suggestive video at all. “Thank you for loving nature, but don’t pick the flowers,” Cambodia’s Environment Ministry posted on Facebook. “You ruin the plant.”

spicy nickname

The plant, called Nepenthes bokorensis, is a carnivorous pitcher plant commonly found in mountainous regions of Cambodia. Because of its shape, the plant soon got the spicy nickname ‘penis plant’, which is also apt for its appearance.

The plant consists of an elongated tube that is used to catch insects (mainly ants). There is also a kind of lid on the plant, which resembles the end of the male sex. If ants crawl into the tube, they drown in the liquids.

The special plant grows in nutrient-poor soil and can grow into a hefty whopper of no less than 7 meters.
