VALIE EXPORT donates its entire film work to the Filmmuseum

The domestic media artist VALIE EXPORT hands over her entire film work to the Austrian Film Museum as a gift. This includes original negatives as well as screening materials for short and feature films as well as extensive working material, it said. The aim of EXPORT’s cinematic work is “to be preserved for future generations”.

The artist, who celebrated her 80th birthday on May 17 this year, has long been associated with the Film Museum, since in the 1980s she gave original material for her films to the founding director of the institution, Peter Konlechner. The first comprehensive retrospective of her films and videos followed in 2007. In the previous year there was also a collaboration in the digitization of their works.

EXPORT is quoted as having accompanied the work of the film museum from the beginning. She was “enthusiastic about the program work and the professionalism of the film museum”. With the gift, she now wants to ensure “that my film work will be kept safe and accessible for a long time”. Film Museum Director Michael Loebenstein praised EXPORT as “the most important contemporary artist at the interface between film, media art, feminist practice and theory”. Her work is “as up-to-date in its consistency and radicalism as it was when it was created. It is therefore an honor and a pleasure for us to ensure that it can inspire, stir and inspire future generations. ”
