The BVB coach spoke unusually clearly about his situation after the loss in the top game against Bayern and surprised with a statement. A day later, however, he denied rumors of a farewell.

Again, BVB could go away empty-handed, again the team of coach Lucien Favre would miss the desired championship title. After the game, the Swiss was asked about the unsuccessful title hunt of the black and yellow – and became unusually clear. When asked if he could “title” at all, the 62-year-old said at Sky: “I don’t read the newspaper, but I know how to do it. I’ll talk about it in a few weeks.” And further: “I remain calm.”
Sky expert Matthäus misinterprets Favre statements
Does Favre indicate his farewell – or was it just frustration and disappointment from the coach after the defeat against Bayern? For sky expert Lothar Matthäus, things seemed clear: “For me, what Favre said has arrived like: Hey, Borussia Dortmund is probably looking for a new coach for the new season.”
A day later, Favre spoke up again – and denied any rumors of a farewell. For his clarification, Favre demonstratively positioned himself in front of the black and yellow team bus with the huge BVB logo. “I will continue. I have a contract. I will fulfill this contract. I like it here,” said the Borussia Dortmund coach in the Sky interview, thus at least for the time being speculation about his future.
Before the 62-year-old was corrected, Hans-Joachim Watzke tried to limit the damage. “There is currently no need for a coaching discussion at all,” the managing director told the newspapers of the Funke media group: “We are playing a very, very good second half of the season, had got 27 out of 30 points before the game and were praised everywhere.” Favre only wanted to say that “as always” an analysis will be done at the end of the season. This was also confirmed by Favre in a blue denim shirt and promised to “attack again” in the new season.
At his last three stations, Favre was unable or unwilling to fulfill his contract. He was released at Hertha in Berlin in autumn 2009, and the Swiss threw himself in Gladbach in September 2015. Favre left OGC Nice a year before the end of his contract in 2019 to switch to BVB in summer 2018.
His current contract with Borussia Dortmund now runs until 2021. It remains to be seen whether he will make another – perhaps last – attempt to the German championship in the coming season.
