The bravest attended a very beautiful spectacle on the night of Sunday May 15 to Monday May 16, 2022. This Monday around 5:29 a.m., the Moon thus turned red in the starry sky.
A phenomenon which occurs approximately twice a year but which is not always observable in France. The last total lunar eclipse had taken place in 2019 in the sky of France and will not be visible again until 2029, recalls The Parisian.
For a few hours, the Moon, the Sun and the Earth were perfectly aligned. The satellite was thus deprived of the sun’s rays, resulting in this red tint that many observers have been able to immortalize around the world.
Some Internet users have thus posted images of the eclipse on Twitter or Instagram, even if sometimes the clouds have not made it possible to completely capture the transformation of the Moon.
The Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth
In Perpignan, the @MadeInPerpignan account managed to capture a very round and red star. Mike Rose also photographed the eclipse from Kansas. Astronomy enthusiasts like Phil Plait have also shared some very beautiful shots.

This morning we tried to photograph the total lunar eclipse, also called #lunesesang because of its red reflections.
A sky and a low moon in the horizon made the shot complicated, waking up very early did not help.#PyreneesOrientales pic.twitter.com/DpyUV3mvRS– MadeInPerpignan (@MadeInPerpi) May 16, 2022

Hervé Dole, professor of astrophysics, watched the show from the roof of Paris-Saclay University. He explains to our colleagues of Francetvinfo why the Earth’s natural satellite took on a reddish color: “The Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth. So, one could imagine that it disappears completely. But this is not completely the case. In fact, the sun’s rays still pass a little bit through the Earth’s atmosphere and therefore it is tinged with red, a bit like at sunrise or sunset, where there is a reddening due to the atmosphere ». For those who missed this unique phenomenon, NASA released a replay of the total lunar eclipse.
