Pharmacists on the tourist island of Bali in Indonesia a tropical version of the hand sanitizer and make it from local alcohol known as “arak”, distilled from palm sap or coconut.
Bali police chief Petrus Reinhard Golose had the idea. He began to collect some 4,000 liters of a local alcoholic drink, produced from palm sap, coconut or rice. It is known locally as “arak”, but differs from the Near Eastern alcohol, which consists of grape juice and anise. For this, he asked the manufacturers to draw on their stocks and also drew from police funds to supplement.
He then asked Udayana University in Bali to find out how to make hand sanitizer with this alcohol to help people protect themselves from the coronavirus.
In one week, the researchers made a disinfectant with an alcohol content of 96% meeting the criteria of the World Health Organization. 10,600 bottles of disinfectant were produced.
