In April, the national consumer price index for the entire Nic community, gross of tobacco, recorded a decrease of 0.1% on a monthly basis and an increase 6% on an annual basis (from + 6.5% of the previous month); the preliminary estimate was + 6.2%. Core inflation, net of energy and fresh food, accelerates from + 1.9% to + 2.4% and inflation net of energy goods alone from + 2.5% to + 2.9%. In Nomisma’s chief economist, Lucio Poma, speaks of inflation at two speeds. Because general inflation is falling, but core inflation is growing significantly: from 1.9% to 2.4%. The general decline in inflation is solely attributable to a slowdown in the growth of energy prices, which however remain at high levels – observes Poma -. These will be tough months for consumers as their shopping cart prices rise, but not their wages. At present, companies cannot add new wage costs to energy and raw material costs. The economist also points out that the purchasing power of citizens is likely to continue to decline for some time, as long as underlying inflation does not stop, or when firms that have structurally absorbed the energy increases are ready to increase wages of workers.
