Tesla’s sales driven by its entry-level sedan

Tesla’s market capitalization is now the largest in the world for an automaker. With 208 billion dollars, the firm now exceeds Toyota, despite production still below target and very limited profits.

A pioneer of all-electric, a cult manufacturer for many, Tesla unleashes passions and sees its sales gradually increasing around the world year after year.

La Model 3 superstar

The numbers have just fallen: Tesla sold in the 2nd quarter of 2020 some 90,650 cars, a slightly decreasing figure compared to 2019, due to the coronavirus crisis.

In the first half of the year, the American manufacturer therefore sold a total of 179,146 cars, the overwhelming majority of which (over 80%) Model 3, its entry-level sedan, sold in France from 49,600 euros.

The initial objective of reaching 500,000 sales this year now seems unrealistic. It remains to be seen whether the brand will be able to beat its record of last year with nearly 370,000 vehicles having found takers.

Tesla wants to conquer China after the United States and Europe

It’s no surprise to United States that Tesla sells the majority of its models. The country alone accounts for almost three-quarters of the manufacturer’s sales.

In Europe, its presence is growing, despite a still slow delivery rate. In 2019, one in three electric cars sold in Europe is signed Tesla. Small feature, the Model 3 was the best-selling car in Norway last year, all models combined, in a country where more than 4 new cars out of 10 sold are electric vehicles.

In France, Tesla sold just over 7,400 cars last year, which allows it to position itself as the best foreign seller of 100% electric vehicles in France. Because in this sector, the French clearly favor the national manufacturers, starting with Renault, the undisputed leader with its Zoé, and Peugeot, which is seriously entering the dance with the e-208.

Tesla is now tackling the Chinese market: the manufacturer recently inaugurated a gigantic new factory near Shanghai, from which future orders from Asia should come.

The American manufacturer is also said to be willing to launch exclusively on the Chinese market a new model at a bargain price.
