Sanders Announces End of His Presidential Campaign | Univision News US Elections 2020

Bernie Sanders announced Wednesday that it will no longer seek the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination for the November elections.

“The path to victory is virtually impossible … I have concluded that this bid for the presidential nomination will not be successful,” said the Vermont senator during a 14-minute speech via streaming to explain the reasons for his withdrawal from the contest.

“Today I congratulate Joe Biden, a very decent man, with whom I will work to advance our progressive ideas. Together we will advance to defeat Donald Trump,” he added.

Sanders had already participated hours before the decision to his campaign team.

The senator thus leaves the way clear for Joe Biden become the Democratic nominee who will face Donald trump.

Biden reacted immediately to the announcement, tweeting that “together we will defeat Donald Trump” and expressing support for Sanders’ main aspirations: global warming, free college education and health care.

Trump also shared his opinion on Twitter, expressing surprise at Sanders’ announcement that he will continue to rally delegates with the goal of including the most modifications in the Democratic government program.

“I will remain on the ballots in the states still pending and continue to gather delegates, but Biden will be the flag bearer,” Sanders said. “We must continue to gather as many delegates as possible at the Democratic convention, where we can exert considerable influence on the partisan platform.”

Analysts agreed that Sanders lagged behind in the Democratic Convention delegate count before Biden and that it was virtually impossible for him to reach the number needed to get the nomination.

Biden currently has 1,217 delegates compared to Sanders’ 914. 1,991 are needed to win the party’s nomination during the National Convention, which due to the coronavirus was postponed for a month until August.

This was the Vermont senator’s second attempt to win the Democratic nomination. In 2016, she lost the primaries to Hillary Clinton, after a campaign whose success was surprising for the Democratic Party establishment.
