Russian director Serebrennikov’s film about Tchaikovsky’s wife shows in Cannes / Article

Serebrenikov pointed out that war is the killing of people and that means the destruction of everything. In war, people are a crowd, not individuals with their own worldview. Art works differently and reflects the vulnerability and importance of the human soul.

The participation of an artist not loved by their national authorities at the beginning of the Cannes Film Festival was in question, but the organizers decided to deny the opportunity to the festival only to Russian artists who have a connection with the authorities. Serebrenikov’s latest film challenges Russian authorities and propagandists trying to hide Tchaikovsky’s homosexuality. The film is heavy and tells about the short marriage of the famous composer from the point of view of his wife – not being able to accept the non-traditional orientation of her husband Antonina Milukov gradually loses her sanity. The director emphasizes that he relied on historical facts and did not try to figure out his story about historical events.
