A Russian ex-military man has contradicted his own country’s propaganda on state television that the morale of the Ukrainian army is poor. He was also not irritated by the moderator’s interjections.

In Russia little is known about how the war of aggression against Ukraine is going. The media only speaks of a “special operation”, propaganda is broadcast about what is happening in the neighboring country. Now a Russian military expert has made surprisingly clear statements on state television. In a video shared on Twitter by BBC journalist Steve Rosenberg, Mikhail Khodarenok can be seen on a Rossiya-1 talk show.

Khodarenok – a former Russian General Staff officer-turned-military analyst and journalist – warns against “informationally numbing yourself”. There are sometimes reports of moral and psychological collapse in the Ukrainian armed forces. “To put it mildly, that’s not true.” Rather, with the help of the United States and Europe, the Ukrainian army could arm a million people. Khodarenok states that the situation is not normal and “will definitely get worse for us”.

According to the military expert, Russia is “completely isolated” geopolitically, and support from India and China is not unconditional. “The whole world is against us, even if we don’t want to see it. We have to solve this problem.” Khodarenok is repeatedly interrupted by the presenter Olga Skabeeva, who throws propagandistic statements into the room.

Skabeeva calls the West “aggressive” and asks how many professional soldiers are in the Ukrainian armed forces, because conscripted soldiers could be less efficient. Khodarenok appears to be choosing his answers carefully, but remains undeterred in his opinion on the strength of Ukraine’s armed forces. The number of professional soldiers is not decisive for the professionalism of an army, it is more about the training and morale of the troops, he explains.

Note: First, the article incorrectly stated that Khodarenok was a former general. According to Russian information, he last served as a general staff officer before retiring.
