Russia began selling tankers due to sanctions – media

Russian shipping company Sovcomflot has sold “about a dozen ships” to buyers in Asia and the Middle East to pay off Western banks amid sanctions. The newspaper reported the day before. The Wall Street Journal with reference to informed sources.

According to them, Sovcomflot sold five tankers to Dubai’s Koban Shipping and four gas carriers to Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping. Eastern Pacific paid $700 million to the bank that took over the ships.

Sovcomflot is also in talks with companies, including the China Merchants Group, to sell other tankers, the sources said. According to them, the ultimate owners of a number of ships sold may not be known for some time.

Shipbrokers said some of the ships sold have changed names and are being registered under different flags to ensure insurance.

Sovcomflot has previously stated that “age tonnage is offered for sale on the market, as well as ships, the operation of which does not seem appropriate due to the restrictions imposed on the Russian merchant fleet.”

PAO Sovcomflot is the largest shipping company in Russia, one of the world leaders in the maritime transportation of liquefied gas, crude oil and petroleum products, as well as maintenance and support of offshore hydrocarbon production.

As of the end of February, the list of Sovcomflot’s own and chartered vessels consisted of 134 vessels. The list included 108 tankers of various classes, 14 gas carriers and 11 specialized vessels.

As a reminder, April 18 The EU closed all its ports to Russian ships. Exceptions apply only to those ships that have sent an SOS (Mayday) signal. Decisions regarding such courts will be made on a case-by-case basis.
