Ruler Kim Jon Un’s plans: North Korea wants more “nuclear deterrence”

North Korea plans to expand its nuclear power. At a meeting of the military commission, it was also discussed to put the armed forces “on high alert”.

North Korea has advised on ways to increase its nuclear power. Ruler Kim Jong Un led a meeting of the Central Military Commission, the state news agency KCNA reported. “Decisive measures” were taken “to significantly increase the firepower of the artillery pieces of the Korean People’s Army”.

At the meeting, a “new policy for the further expansion of the country’s nuclear deterrence” was presented. There was also discussion about putting the strategic armed forces “on high alert”.

Negotiations with the United States

North Korea is subject to international sanctions for its nuclear weapons program. Nuclear negotiations with the U.S. have made no progress since the February 2019 summit between the two countries in Vietnam.

KCNA’s announcement comes shortly after a Washington Post report that the United States was the first to consider a nuclear test as a warning to Russia and China since 1992. The government of US President Donald Trump discussed this possibility at a meeting on May 15, the paper quoted a senior government official and two former US officials.

Arms Control Association non-governmental leader Daryl Kimball had told the Washington Post that such a decision would likely disrupt negotiations with Kim, “who may no longer be forced to adhere to his nuclear test moratorium.”
