NEW YORK – The Tribeca Film Festival is set to be the first in-person film festival after the pandemic in the United States and will also host one of the first major indoor events at full capacity for a fully vaccinated audience.
The Radio City Music Hall will host the festival’s closing night on June 19 before a full-capacity audience, 100% vaccinated and without masks, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Monday.
“To have Radio City back to 100% mask-free, with people enjoying New York and the arts of New York, not only will it be symbolic and metaphorical, but I think it will go a long way in bringing this state back in general, “added Cuomo. “People are going to say, ‘So if I’m not vaccinated I can’t go?’ That’s how it is.”
Meanwhile, a new park, Pier 76 on the Hudson, will officially open on June 9 and host the opening night screening of the Tribeca Cinde Festival with the long-awaited film. “In the Heights” de Lin-Manuel Miranda, yet another step towards a new normal for New York State.
The United Palace Theater in Washington Heights will host a special screening of the film, in addition to eight open-air venues throughout the city’s five boroughs. Tickets are free (only two locations still had tickets on Monday) and are reserved for groups of one to four people sitting in places together.
Eight different venues in the city’s five boroughs will simultaneously screen the festival’s opening night film in what organizers have called the longest. Tickets for the June 9 screening of “In the Heights” are free (only two venues still had tickets on Monday) and attendees will be divided into groups.
James Dolan, CEO of Madison Square Garden Sports Corp., joined Cuomo’s press conference Monday to announce the news from Radio City Music Hall. Every event held at the iconic New York City venue will require attendees to be fully vaccinated, not just on the festival’s closing night, he said.
“[Robert] De Niro and I started the festival 19 years ago as the governor said after 9/11 with the purpose of bringing people back to the center, “said Jane Rosenthal, co-founder of the festival.” Now, in the wake of another crisis, our founding mission is even more relevant today. “
The 20th Tribeca Festival returns after a pandemic disruption with an expansion of outdoor screenings throughout New York City. This year’s festival, typically held in the spring, takes place over 12 days in June, with events at outdoor venues such as Battery, Hudson Yards, Pier 57 Rooftop, Brookfield Place, MetroTech Commons, and Empire Outlets.
