Public Prosecutor’s Office warns against plague “keyless” car theft … (Leuven)

Leuven –

The Leuven public prosecutor warns against a plague of so-called “keyless thefts” or “keyless thefts” of expensive cars, mainly of the Toyota brand. In the past month, four vehicles were stolen in Leuven and ten similar thefts occurred in the Brussels region. The public prosecutor therefore asks for extra vigilance.

“Keyless theft occurs in cars that can be opened and started via remote control and where no key is required,” says the public prosecutor’s office. “The thieves pick up the signal from the remote control in the home via devices. When the car is parked close enough to the house, the signal can penetrate the walls and glass of the house and extend to the car. ”

During the past month, four cars were stolen in this way in the judicial district of Leuven, mainly cars of the Toyota brand. In addition, ten more such thefts took place in June 2020 alone. The thefts occurred in Anderlecht, Schaerbeek, Kortenberg, Sint-Genesius-Rode, Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Wezembeek-Oppem, Merchtem, Roosdaal, Jette, Kraainem , Aarschot, Leuven and Aartselaar.

“Due to the sudden advance of this type of theft, we ask to be extra vigilant,” the public prosecutor continues. “Look out for suspicious people around vehicles in driveways and around homes. To avoid the ‘keyless theft’, you can store your remote control indoors in a metal box, or park your car further away from your home. ”
