Public meeting: no thanks to the single hospital!

The public meeting organized by the Popular Union brought together mostly opponents of the single hospital, but not only. Excerpts from the debates that took place.

HEALTH: no thanks to the single hospital! (end)

Bad good idea, or health disaster? Friday evening, several opponents of the project to build the Lanne hospital center met at the Palais des Congrès to express their exasperation at not being heard.

Fourteen thousand signatures… If we are to believe Marie-Claire Delemotte, member of the Popular Union (Jean-Luc Mélenchon), former Udaf representative (Departmental Union of Family Associations), the petition against the single hospital in Lanne, which ‘she is about to send to the prefecture, is likely to be rather salty.

For his part, the CGT departmental secretary, José Navarro, regrets the total lack of debate and information: “Does the question of health not concern the whole public?”

Lack of consultation

And to specify: “Bring the hospital back to a company: a logic of total abstraction, with the closure of 17,000 beds at the national level… We have seen what happened with the pandemic!”

The future Lanne hospital? A liberal rationalization project decided without any consultation: “We questioned the President of the General Council (Michel Pélieu, editor’s note), who replied that he had no account to render to us”, in a specific territory, marked by the influx of tourists and pilgrims.

Will the new hospital attract doctors?

The future Lanne hospital? A cost of 268 million euros by 2028: a godsend that would be enough, according to Marjorie Moutel, secretary of the vigilance group, to revitalize local hospitals, such as those in Tarbes and Lourdes, which are much more accessible when you comes for example from Gavarnie (a little less than an hour by car, all the same).

And Marjorie Moutel, to drive the point home, recalling that the smoky “numerus clausus”, supposedly abolished, continues to bring its misdeeds.

Quite a program, it being understood that she is not at all convinced that the new hospital is attracting new medics, in a region in the process of medical desertification.

An organizational problem

In the audience, a female doctor (municipal councilor) is in favor of the single hospital: “If I had to settle in Lourdes today, I would no longer do it, no more than my husband, a cardiologist. […] When I defend the single hospital project, it is for economic considerations: the world is changing, and it is not a question of money. Medicine is organization, and the better organized you are, the better it works.”

Other words, from another woman, radiologist in Tarbes: “I insist on the fact that there has been a change in outpatient medicine. The staff no longer want, rightly, to sacrifice themselves as before. There is has medical specialties that cannot be nearby…”

Conclusion of José Navarro: medicine meets a common need that the single hospital of Lanne, established in a historical and ecological site could not satisfy, whereas it would be enough to modernize the two already existing hospitals.
