Cyclo-cross rider Fleur Nagengast (left on the photo) has put an end to her career at the age of 22. The promising Dutch woman has been plagued by an injury to her back for two years.
Nagengast took silver at the World Cup under 23 in Denmark last year. She had to tolerate fellow countryman Inge van der Heijden, but was ahead of Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, currently world champion with the elite.
A year earlier, the Drentse had already made an impression by winning the World Cup for promises and winning bronze in the same category at the European Championship. She also became Dutch junior champion twice.
“My body is currently no longer able to participate in top sport. In the end, I decided to stop with a lot of pain in my heart,” Nagengast said on the site of her Belgian team Telenet Baloise Lions on Thursday.
“Now a new life awaits me with a new challenge. Thanks to an excellent result in the admission round, I can start a midwifery course in September. I think it is important to have something new to look forward to. A new start makes the process to process this decision a little more bearable. “
Former top field rider Sven Nys, as the team leader of Telenet Baloise Lions, was impressed by the development that Nagengast went through. “The sharpening of the starts and cornering, her positive attitude and character were rewarded with a silver medal at the World Cup.”
