Over 35,000 deaths worldwide, three quarters of which in Europe

The new coronavirus pandemic has killed at least 35,000 people worldwide, including nearly three-quarters in Europe, since it appeared in China in December, according to an AFP agency report, with data from official country sources.

According to data collected by the French news agency, at 16:15 today, 35,905 deaths were recorded, including 26,076 in Europe, currently the continent most affected.

With 11,591 deaths, Italy is the country with the most deaths in the world, followed by Spain (7,340) and China (3,304), the initial focus of the contagion.

More than 740,000 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 183 countries and territories, including at least 408,203 in Europe, almost 150,000 in the United States and Canada (2,635 deaths among them) and 106,609 in Asia (3,827 deaths).

AFP warns, however, that the number of diagnosed cases reflects only a fraction of the actual number of infections, as a large number of countries are currently testing the most serious cases.

In Portugal, according to the balance made today by the Directorate-General for Health, there were 140 deaths, 21 more than the day before (+ 17.6%), and 6,408 cases of confirmed infections, which represents an increase of 446 in compared to Sunday (+ 7.5%).

Of those infected, 571 are hospitalized, 164 of whom are in intensive care units, and there are 43 patients who have recovered.
