The World Health Organization said today that since March, the peak of the covid-19 pandemic in Europe, at least 159,000 more have died on the European continent than in the same period last year.

The “alarming number” was revealed today by the European regional director of WHO, Hans Kluge, who indicated that, according to data collected in 24 countries, the excess mortality recorded since the beginning of March is “far above what would normally be expected at this time of year ”.

In a virtual press conference from the organization’s European headquarters in Copenhagen, Hans Kluge indicated that in the 53 countries covered, “more than two million cases were registered [de covid-19] and more than 175 thousand deaths ”.

According to WHO figures, more than 94% of all deaths related to covid-19 were from people over 60 years of age and 59% were men.

In 97% of cases, there was another previous disease, in most cases cardiovascular.

In the last two weeks, the number of accumulated cases increased by 15% and in that period, the countries with the most new cases reported were Russia, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Belarus and Italy.
