No money back for participants?

All major running events planned in Austria over the next few months have since been canceled due to the corona virus.

The biggest victim is the Vienna CIty Marathon with over 30,000 participants. The marathon should have taken place this month, but was canceled. A shift was ruled out in advance.

Do participants get their money back?

There is still no concrete statement from the organizer. VCM boss Wolfgang Konrad speaks of a goodwill offer for the participants. According to the terms and conditions, no reimbursement is provided for a cancellation due to force majeure. Most organizers this year, which were affected by a cancellation or postponement, have so far been very accommodating. The Bratislava Marathon, for example, had postponed the marathon to September 2020. Already registered starting places are valid for this date. However, should runners not be able to compete on the date in September, the starting place can also be used for one of the three subsequent years (2021 – 2023).

Solutions for the runners

Many organizers refunded the full amount of the participation fee. This applies especially to small and medium-sized events, whose financial burdens in preparation for the event are not nearly as great as for example at the VCM. A refund of the full entry fee is therefore unlikely. It would also be possible to use the starting place for the Vienna Marathon 2021 free of charge. But then the organizer would hardly have any new income for the event in 2021. This scenario is also unrealistic.

Realistic discount for 2021

Partial reimbursement of the entry fee seems realistic, so that the organizers can at least somewhat cover the costs incurred so far. A starting place for 2021 at a reduced tariff would also be possible. According to the current status, this would be the most realistic variant.

Million damage for the VCM

The Vienna Marathon expects the corona pandemic to cause damage of around 1.5 to 2 million euros. In an interview with the Tyrolean daily newspaper, Wolfgang Konrad emphasized that he did not want to fire any employees.
