The first owner of the specimen, whose surviving components were recently used in the reconstruction, replaced the 1 100 OHC power unit with a practical OHV piston from the Felicia model, the engine was then displayed in the Mladá Boleslav recreation centre and it took a full century to return to the car.

The second owner crashed with a heap of bohuel, the boy wreck escaped through a hole in the rear plexiglass, the clay bodywork was irreversibly damaged by the fire. The disassembled rear axle together with the solid axle was then included in the collections of the National Technical Museum in Prague (NTM), which provided it to the Code Museum 25 years ago, first by Lnk. The space frame of the car, which would be broken into four pieces, but the complete pedestrian carriage and other preserved parts were purchased by the Koda Museum in 2014 from a private collector.

Legends Reborn

The ambitious restoration project could not have been carried out without the experience of the Museum’s expert code with the work on the opening. And so without the original technical documentation, preserved in the books of the Auto Code in such a complete form, all the branches and drawings illuminating the construction of the individual groups, Ondej Lnk describes. The original mechanical components showed relatively little wear and tear, and the pattern was only obscured by the deception. The refurbishment of the complete chassis with new cooling, radiator and other elements was completed at the end of 2015.

Instead of the originally considered chassis on display in the museum exposition next to the open one, it was decided to reconstruct it into a fully functional car.

According to the restorers, the clay body of the coupes itself was the most expensive part of the reconstruction. The author of its original design was the internal designer Jaroslav Kindl from Mladá Boleslav. At that time, a detailed mock-up of the chest was created on his basis. The Hlinka panels were hammered out by a group of carpenters, the parts were joined by welds and rivets.

The restoration company connected the hearts with the centre of the prototype building during the reconstruction. After all, the teachers of this specialist once built the buy, delivered to Lnk. On the basis of a scan of 2D drawing in scale 1:1 was created with curves in 3D covered with surfaces. It took hundreds of hours to adjust and correct the shape of the individual elements, for example the pedal and taillight areas. You had to compare the surviving photographs with the drawing documentation and the 3D model. In the virtual studio, the experts could look at the model from all sides and then make further corrections. For a further round shape, models were created in a modified scale and then models of the front and rear corners of the body in 1:1 scale. After the expert assessment, the subsequent corrections and the final approval, the construction of the tailgate, the wheel arches and other elements of the bodywork were completed and hidden from view.

The body of the KODA 1100 OHC Coup consisted of a lightweight and rigid space frame made of thin-walled steel tubes. The pedal wheels were guided by an odd-angle pair of triangular arms, with a trailing-arm axle at the rear.

The body itself was made of 0.8 mm and 1.0 mm thick aluminium sheets, also in the 21st century welded and glued together. The original blue colour of the bodywork, which was created by chemical true anodizing, was used for the purchase. This finish was not hardened in heavy use, and so from the middle of the 1962 season onwards, both cars were given an active red colour.

The codebooks for the reconstruction of the cars included a number of small components identical to those of the contemporary Soviet cars. For example, its two cranks correspond to the Koda 1200 Sedan, which was used by the 440 Spartak and Octavia models, the three-spoke steering wheel covered with black plastic, which is evident in period drawings and photographs, again refers to the early bestseller Popular.
