MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS – Video: Central Electoral Board opens the municipal elections

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) formally starts the Extraordinary Municipal Elections in which the mayors of the 158 municipalities of the country will be elected.

The Plenary of the JCE faces once again the municipal elections in one month. This time it is about extraordinary elections that are held due to the suspension of last February 16.

The electoral register of these elections has more than 7.4 million people capable of voting.

According to the figures presented by the JCE, almost 30 percent of the voters that make up this register are between 18 and 25 years old, representing 17.3%, while the age range between 26 and 30 years represents 11.9 %.

On this occasion, manual voting will be used in all voting centers after the failure of the automated voting system in the frustrated elections on February 16.

The failure of the last municipal elections motivated the Dominican population, mostly young people, to demonstrate against the electoral body in different parts of the country and the world. The Plaza de la Bandera was the place chosen by the Protestant residents of Santo Domingo.

The failure of automated voting is being investigated by the Organization of American States (OAS), but initially the ruling party and the opposition accused each other of having perpetrated sabotage.

Coronavirus

These elections are also marked by the coronavirus pandemic, which registers 11 cases in the country, all imported according to the authorities.

Regarding the threats of contagion by the coronavirus, the Minister of Public Health, Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, explained that the elections to be held in the country will not be compromised by the coronavirus COVID-19, because there is no community circulation of the aforementioned virus. .

However, it offers preventive measures such as standing one meter away from another voter, not touching the face with unwashed hands, not approaching people who have flu symptoms, among others.
