The first warning signal was given for a fire in Fontes, in the neighboring municipality of Abrantes, but the flames were almost entirely in the municipality of Sardoal, with the three active fronts being combated by more than 200 operational and 11 aerial means. The river beach of Penedo Furado, in Vila de Rei, was even evacuated but just in case. The next few hours will be dedicated to consolidating the aftermath of the fire.

Check here the declarations of the Abrantes firefighter commander:

21:00: The fire that started around 17:00 in the parish of Fontes, Abrantes, was still active around 21:00 but giving way to the means of combat. According to the District Command for Relief Operations (CDOS) of Santarém, the flames advanced to the neighboring municipality of Sardoal but without registering any people or homes in danger. Two of the three fire fronts are subdued, keeping the fire head active by about 50%.

The 11 aerial means that have been on the ground have already left the theater of operations and the command post was set up in Portela da Selada, Sardoal. The terrestrial means will remain on the ground throughout the night, hoping that in the next years this fire may enter the aftermath phase.

18:30 – A fire that broke out at about 17:00 in Água Das Casas, parish of Fontes (Abrantes) entered the municipality of Sardoal, parish of Santiago de Montalegre, and had three fronts active at 6:30 pm. At the site, 212 operational combatants were fighting this fire, supported by 52 vehicles and 11 aerial means, according to the Santarém CDOS.

Speaking to mediotejo.net, around 6:15 pm, commander José Nepomuceno said that three active fronts remained and that more means were going to the theater of operations, having stated that the combat was evolving favorably and that the perspective was put out the fire before nightfall.

“There are no injuries, there are no sensitive points and it is evolving favorably”, he noted, having added that “there are no houses in danger” and reported that the biggest difficulties felt on the ground were the accesses, but that the 11 aerial means would solve this problem . On the other hand, the wind factor was not an obstacle to the success of the combat considering the little wind that was felt on the ground, blowing the same from the northwest.

“We should be able to resolve this fire in a short time,” he said, having noted that, since there are no more fires in the district, all means are concentrated in resolving this occurrence. “The air media have the autonomy to be there until 8:30 pm”, he noted, when it was expected that the situation would be resolved.
