L’Oreal will remove the words “brightening” and “whitening” from the description of its products

L’Oreal, the world leader in the market for beauty products, has announced that it will no longer use the words “whitening” and “brightening” in the description of its products. “The L’Oreal Group has decided to remove the words“ white ”/“ whitening ”and“ light ”/“ brightening ”from all of its skin products,” says the statement a company distributed in the media.

The statement was made amid protests against racial inequality that began after the death of black American George Floyd at the hands of the police. L’Oreal is not the first company to make design or production changes in the face of growing criticism over the lack of diversity in advertising and product mix, taking into account racial equality. So, last week, the Unilever division in India and Bangladesh also announced the refusal to use the word “light” on skin care products. Johnson & Johnson decided to completely stop selling skin whitening creams and lotions, and to remove the word “lightening” from the product description.
