LIVE | WHO: scientists to China to investigate corona origin | Inland

Scientists will travel to China this weekend to investigate the origin of the new coronavirus, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports. It also examines how the lung virus has been transmitted from an animal to a human, as is believed.

“The best place to start is where the virus first appeared in humans,” said Mike Ryan, head of the WHO’s emergency program. “And the place where that happened and where the first significant amount of atypical pneumonia occurred was in Wuhan,” said Ryan, referring to the outbreak in China’s metropolis.

China has been accused by Trump, among others, of withholding alarming information. Therefore, according to critics of the communist country, a lot of precious time was lost. China has always maintained that it has been transparent since the outbreak began. However, initially the country barely wanted to admit outside researchers.

In protest at the corona outbreak, the United States has officially left the WHO. Senator Bob Menendez, a member of the rival Democrats, criticized the move in the midst of the corona crisis. This will not protect American lives or interests, he tweeted. “It leaves Americans sick and America alone.”

200,000 deaths

In Europe, more than 200,000 people have now succumbed to the coronavirus, AFP news agency reports Tuesday on the basis of its own count. Europe is therefore the hardest-hit continent since the corona pandemic.

The United Kingdom (44,236), Italy (34,869), France (29,920) and Spain (28,388) are responsible for more than two thirds of the 200,005 deaths now registered on a total of 2,751,606 infected cases in Europe. In the Netherlands, 6,132 people have died from Covid-19 so far. In total, 50,694 people in the Netherlands contracted the virus.
