While containment measures have become widespread around the world, many companies and individuals have rushed to PCs and laptops in order to continue their teleworking activity. According to Canalys, PC shipments increased 9% from last year, with 72.9 million units distributed worldwide in the second quarter of 2020.
Good figures which owe much to the increased demand for laptops for remote work. Especially since the first quarter did not promise to be prolific due to serious supply and logistics problems which prevented meeting the high demand from businesses and individuals.
In fact, the rebound in the PC market was boosted by laptop shipments, which increased 24% from the previous year, while desktop shipments fell 26%, according to Canalys, which includes Chromebooks in the laptop category.
Laptops on top
“Laptops alone pulled the PC market out of the depression,” said Rushabh Doshi, research director at Canalys. “They have been essential in ensuring that the service, government and education sectors can continue to function in the face of unprecedented disruption and uncertainty.” Suppliers and the chain have made the necessary changes to speed up the production and delivery of laptops to the highest level in years, “he said.
Other analysts say the market is growing slower: Gartner sees an increase of only 2.8% year-over-year over the same period, while IDC notes that global deliveries have increased 11.2%, although they all measure slightly different things.
HP experienced the strongest growth in the second quarter of 2020, taking first place from Lenovo with a 17.5% increase in deliveries to 18 million units and a 24.8% market share, according to Canalys. Lenovo shipped 17.4 million units, up 7% from the previous year, leaving it 23.9% of the global market. Dell’s shipments increased 3.4% to 12 million units, while Apple’s shipments increased 13.1% to 5.35 million units. Acer shipments increased 21% to 4.99 million units.
Overall, the industry shipped 72.9 million units in the second quarter of 2020, compared to 66.9 million units the previous year.
