La Courneuve: the solidarity garage that repairs vehicles and people

MobilHub is much more than a garage. “We repair vehicles and people,” say Seyfeddine Cherraben and Olivier K. Esclauze, who initiated the project. This structure of insertion by the economic activity (SIAE) makes it possible to have its vehicle repaired, with four or two wheels, at a lower cost by a public in reintegration. Installed on a wasteland opposite Eurocopter, it will soon double as a mobility fab lab.

“This is the key to a return to employment, they analyze. One out of two jobs is refused for a mobility problem. The project was designed by a dozen young entrepreneurs who are as ingenious as they are pugnacious. These 30-somethings embarked on the adventure when they had never worked in the automotive sector. One is the head of an engineering office, the other is a strategy consultant and teaches at the university.

The public authorities support the initiative

They first created an association Les Cités d’or, “because the 93 is an Eldorado. There are many young people who want to be entrepreneurs, but there are psychological blocks and few solutions”. “We realized that there were a lot of associations in culture, education, social. Much less in economic development,” they explain.

The Courneuvian Seyfeddine was able to see the omnipresence of wild mechanics in the streets. “It’s a scourge but some of these mechanics have golden hands. We wanted to recruit this audience,” continues Seyfeddine.

To set up this project, it was necessary to convince the public authorities. “The car is not too much in tune with the times”, acknowledges Olivier. The Department, the City, Pôle Emploi and the Directorate for Business, Labor and Employment (Direccte) support the initiative. “MobilHub” is an innovative and eco-friendly project. This is exactly what we need today: practical and pragmatic solutions that respond to the dual social and environmental emergency”, underlines Stéphane Troussel, president (PS) of the departmental council.

Three employees in integration supervised by a professional

Three back-to-work employees, soon to be five, supervised by a professional, straighten the crumpled sheets or restart the worn mechanics. In a brick shed, Kamel, 41, a former street mechanic, appreciates: “I work with peace of mind, I have a salary, I am in good standing. Everything is back in order. It changes your life”. MobilHub has also hired an integration counselor who takes care of all the social procedures.

Customers also benefit from it since the services are billed at €30 per hour for the poorest and €45 for the others. You must first join the association.

The solidarity garage is only the first stage of the rocket imagined by these young creators. The MobiLab will make it possible to imagine new ways of getting around, establish mobility diagnoses, think about applications and open up its talent incubator to other projects.

After having facilitated their installation on this wasteland, the town hall of La Courneuve will integrate them into the site of the former KDI company.
