“Kitchen in the area” begins to prepare dishes of temporarily closed restaurants

On April 5, the ready-to-eat food delivery service “Kitchen on the District” will offer users a new menu where dishes according to recipes closed due to coronavirus will be presented. About this “Vedomosti” said a company representative.

Now nine restaurants are cooperating with the service: “Sculpt and Cook”, “House of Cultures”, Dizengof99 and others. All of them will receive 10% from sales of dishes prepared according to their recipes. The representative of Kukhni na raion didn’t disclose plans for cooperation with other catering establishments, saying that all current partners are restaurants with which the company “already had contact”.

The updated menu will be available to users of “Kitchens in the area” in the “Food Market” section. Each restaurant will have its own separate tab with several dishes. Their order will be available in more than 30 districts of Moscow where the service works, its representative says. According to him, prices for a part of the positions will not differ from restaurant ones.

All dishes are cooked by the “Kitchens in the area.” Depending on the composition of a particular dish and the method of its preparation, the service buys some of the products on its own, and partly is supplied by the restaurants that cooperate with it. For example, “Sculpt and Cook” delivers home-made dumplings, which employees of the “Kitchen in the District” themselves cook, says her representative. According to him, additional investments were not required to expand the menu “Kitchen in the area”.

The cooperation of “Kitchens in the area” with restaurants will help them pay employees salaries or cover part of the lease, said service co-founder Kirill Rodin. In fact, “Kitchen in the area” shares part of the revenue with its partners, preparing their dishes, he adds.

Due to the self-isolation regime introduced in Moscow, the revenue of cafes and restaurants fell 10 times, says Peter Rabchevsky, co-owner of the House of Cultures. Since the government did not declare an emergency, food service in the absence of customers still has to pay rent for the premises and salaries to employees – the proceeds from cooperation with “Kitchen in the area” will go to cover it. The main thing in such conditions is to keep the team, emphasizes Rabchevsky.

Partnership with “Kitchen in the area” will allow Dizengof99 to expand its audience thanks to service customers: people will see the name of the restaurant in the application and go to its website, which presents a lot more dishes, counts Dizengof99 co-owner Yevgeny Tsyupko. According to him, the restaurant has been cooperating with the Yandex.Food and Delivery Club delivery services for a long time, and from the weekend of March 28–29, when the self-isolation regime was announced, it also delivers orders by its own couriers, one of which is the co-owner himself.

Catering problems began in mid-March, when, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Russians began to visit public places many times less. Turnover of cafes and restaurants fell by 30–90%, according to the Federation of Restaurateurs and Hoteliers (FRIO). The situation worsened after the introduction of a strict self-isolation regime in Moscow and other Russian cities from March 30 to April 30 – all catering outlets in this period should be closed and only take-away should work. The government has already taken a number of measures to support small and medium-sized businesses, which find themselves in a difficult situation due to COVID-19.

Other delivery services also announced support measures for catering that had closed due to coronavirus. Yandex.Food and Delivery Club introduced on their platforms an accelerated procedure for registering new restaurants. And the large online and offline retailers X5 Retail Group, Magnit, Wildberries offered to temporarily employ restaurant employees who had lost their jobs.
