Karista wins ‘The Voice Kids’: “Duncan taught me that I don’t have to sing perfectly” | showbiz

TVTalent was in the latest edition of ‘The Voice Kids’, but the Antwerp Karista (14) stood head and shoulders above it. “I actually don’t like a lot of attention, but being on stage and making people happy with my voice is wonderful.”

Three years ago she continued to falter in the studio shows of ‘Belgium’s Got Talent’, but this time it was hit for Karista Khan (13) from Antwerp in ‘The Voice Kids’. With her powerful voice reminiscent of a young Whitney Houston, she blew all competition away and impressed her coach Duncan Laurence time and time again.

“Actually, I had decided in advance that I would go for Laura Tesoro as a coach if she turned around for me,” said Karista. “I knew Duncan his Eurovision song, but not him. But at the Blind Audition he looked at me, I looked at him, and there was an instant click. Someone who won the Eurovision Song Contest has of course also gained a lot of extra experience and I could certainly use his tips. I thought he was a nice guy to work with. He is very caring and sweet.

Every time I thought I couldn’t do something, he took those doubts away. “It’s a rehearsal, you can make mistakes Karista,” he said. He taught me that I don’t have to sing too perfect, then it becomes more beautiful.”

Gospel fan

She doesn’t get the talent from strangers: Karista’s mother has sung with Will Tura and her aunt leads a church choir in the Netherlands, of which Karista is also a member. “I love gospel very much, my favorite artist is Chandler Moore. For me, gospel is a kind of communication tool with God, I really like the message of hope and encouragement in that music.”

Karista will soon start her exams, because she does not want to neglect school despite everything that is coming at her now. “My parents also think that education is very important, and I have enough discipline to combine everything,” she says. “So in September I’m just going to the third high school, I’m going to follow human sciences. We’ll see how my singing career evolves. I registered for ‘The Voice Kids’ without any great ambitions, I just wanted to see how far I could get and above all I wanted to gain experience. I never expected to finish first. Actually I don’t like all that attention, but I’m glad of course that I could record the single ‘Shackles’ – a cover of Mary Mary – and the scholarship of 10,000 euros will come in handy later when I start studying music. I hope to have some performances this summer, because being on stage and making people happy with my voice is something I love.”

This was the final of ‘The Voice Kids 2022’

Our eight finalists festively opened the show with ‘That’s What I Really Want’ by Lil Nas X. Camille also suddenly appeared on stage. She was the surprise act in the grand finale of ‘The Voice Kids’. She released a wonderful version of ‘Hou Vol/ Lift U Up’ from ‘Love for Music’.

All eight finalists performed one song tonight. After performing a number one by one, the coaches sent their top finalist to the final round. Jinthe from team Metejoor sang the song ‘Good 4 U’ by Olivia Rodrigo. Marie-Emilie, the second candidate from team Metejoor, chose ‘At Last’ by Etta James. Anne and Sien were the two remaining finalists from team K3. Anne sang ‘Miss You’ by Jeremie during the grand finale. The 14-year-old Sien pulled out all the stops with Delta Rae’s ‘Bottom Of The River’.

JAP and Gloria, from Laura Tesoro’s team, also got one last chance to prove themselves today. JAP did that with the song ‘Love Nwantiti’ by CKay. Gloria opted for ‘I’m Tired van Labrinth’ by Zendaya. Last but not least we had Karista and Lina from Duncan Laurence’s team. Lina shone with ‘Mamma Knows Best’ by Jessie J. Karista managed to amaze everyone with ‘Glory’ by Common and John Legend.
