Josef Abrham was born on December 14, 1939 in Zlín. He graduated from the Prague DAMU and in the 1960s worked at the Theater in Vinohrady and the Drama Club. He was briefly engaged in the National Theater.

But the most important are his film roles. In 1961, he won the first one in the student film Věra Chytilová’s Ceiling and at the same time in the detective film Vladimír Čech Where Alibi Is Not Enough.

His film career took off quickly, during the sixth decade he starred in the films The Great Journey (1963), Every Day Courage (1964), Dita Sax (1967) and Pension for Free Masters (1967).

The 1970s brought The Beautiful Dragoon (1970), The Girl to Kill (1975) and the Vise comedy Marečka, Give Me a Pen!

The films Ball Lightning (1978) and Vrchní, prchni! (1981) by the Svěrák-Smoljak duo, where Abrhám perfected his concept of timid heroes who become entangled in unsolvable comic situations.

This was followed by Vančur’s The End of Old Times (1989) directed by Jiří Menzel.

In the 1990s, he celebrated further successes in Andělské oko (1994) or in Jiří Hřebejk’s Jackal Years, for which he received the Czech Lion. After the films All My Loved Ones (1998) and The Men’s Ride (2004) came Hřebejk’s Beauty in Trouble (2006).

Abrham last appeared in front of a film camera in 2016 in Jiří Strach’s film Angel of the Lord 2.

Josef Abrhám was also a busy serial actor. He became famous as Dr. Blažej at the Hospital on the Outskirts of the City (1977) and also appeared in other series such as The Little Pitaval from the Big City (1982), Circus Humberto (1988), Necklace (1992), Náves (2006) and Countesses (2007) .

However, the attempt to continue the once popular “hospital” (Hospital on the outskirts of the city after twenty years from 2003) was one of the worst-rated Czech series. In 2017, he appeared in the series Dwarf.
