Ireland, Boris and Brexit: a crossroads

Prime Minister of UK Boris Johnsonvisited Belfast this Monday to try to deal with the problems of unionists and republicans, who for now have paralyzed Parliament and the autonomous institutions of the region. As background to the crisis: disagreement over trade provisions posbrexitsubject in which Johnson bears much of the responsibility.

Ten days after the historic victory of the Republican Party Ourselves -former political arm of IRA and supporter of the reunification of Ireland– in the regional legislatures, the Northern Irish institutions are paralyzed by the rejection of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) to participate in them, since they refuse to be part of the formation of the new government until London get rid of Ireland Protocolwhich was part of the measures promoted by the premier to make Brexit possible.

“None of the parties like the way the Northern Irish protocol works, and they all believe that it can be reformed and improved,” the prime minister assured the television cameras after interviewing the five regional political forces.

The agreement that has revived the conflict between both political factions -and which was established to safeguard peace between the regions-, links Northern Ireland to the community market for goods, forcing the region to pass through customs control any merchandise enter or exit to United Kingdom.

After two years of Brexit, the Protocol has generated shortages, cumbersome customs procedures and revived political tensions, mainly on the unionist side.

According to the peace agreement Holy Fridaysigned in 1998, the government of the region is divided between Catholics and Protestants, and if any of the parties decides not to collaborate, the system is paralyzed.
