NEW DELHI: A person infected with coronavirus can potentially infect 406 other people in just 30 days in the absence of locking and distancing measures, but this can drop dramatically to 2.5 people with a 75% reduction in social exposure , a recent study by the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) shows.
“If a person does not meet the standards of social lockdown and distancing, they can infect 406 people in 30 days. However, if social exposure is reduced by 75%, the same infected person can transmit it to only 2.5 people, “Lav Agarwal, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Health, said Tuesday.
“This is why we call on all of you to follow the measures of foreclosure and social distancing. We need to understand that this is a very important intervention in the management of Covid-19, ”added Agarwal, citing the study to emphasize the importance of observing national lock-in.
Currently the mathematical component representing the number of people to whom an infected person can spread the disease is between 1.5 and 4 for Covid-19, said Agarwal and added that the Minister of Health of the Harsh Vardhan Union was right to assert that “social isolation is a social vaccine” in the management of infection.
However, recent reports also suggest that the new coronavirus often infects clusters of family members and friends. In China, almost 80% of transmission seems to have occurred within families. A similar pattern has also been reported in the United States.
These trends are growing in India where family members often stay together and members belong to different age groups, making social distance difficult. While older adults are at higher risk of developing serious illness because of the illness, younger family members are more likely to be asymptomatic carriers.
With 354 new Covid-19 cases and eight deaths reported in the past 24 hours, the total number of coronavirus-positive cases in the country has risen to 4,421, while the total number of deaths was 117, said the Ministry of Health.-
