In Belgium, an official offered to give one of the regions to the Netherlands

Mayor of Antwerp Barth de Wever

The Flemish region occupies more than 40% of the territory of Belgium and includes the five northern provinces of the country.

The mayor of the Belgian city of Antwerp, Bart de Vever, believes that the Flanders region should be annexed to the neighboring Netherlands. The official shared this opinion in interview TV channel KanaalZ, published on Thursday 22 July.

“I have never given up on this dream: for everyone who speaks Dutch to live together again in the southern and northern Netherlands. This is a personal point of view, and the public is not yet ready for it. But what is unthinkable today, tomorrow may be reality, “said de Vever.

The politician explained that the unification would contribute to the creation of one of the strongest economies in the world, and the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam could become the gates of the northwestern European economy.

According to the TV channel, de Wever is a member of the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) party, which advocates granting autonomy to Flanders, and later also for the acquisition of the region’s independence. At the same time, the Flemish region occupies more than 40% of the territory of Belgium and includes five northern provinces.

Flanders is an economically developed northern part of the country, where Dutch is spoken. Flemish parties demand more freedom for the region and consider it quite probable the restoration of the confederation of the Netherlands in the historical territory of the Seventeen Provinces, which in 1585 divided into the Southern Netherlands (Belgium and Luxembourg) and the United Seven Provinces (Netherlands).

We will remind, in the fall of last year in Belgium was recorded a new world record for life without a full government – 653 days. The new government of the country began work on October 1.
