During the pandemic, there were long lines of records for state-paid visits to the dentist’s children, it is not possible to visit the doctor once a year, as recommended by dentists. In order to improve the situation, it is necessary to think about how to ensure the required number of specialists, but no less important is the education of parents on the issues of oral hygiene and eating habits of the child.
Parents need to look for a family doctor and call for an agreement on the child’s dental treatment, calls Andis Paeglītis, President of the Latvian Dental Association, to expand the availability of state-paid dental services.
A similar opinion is expressed by Nellija Petrova, a senior expert of the Outpatient Services Division of the National Health Service – family dentists call for concluding cooperation agreements on state-paid dental services.
For 12 years, there have been two mobile dental buses operating in Latvia, which travel to more distant educational institutions, it is financed by the state, and the services are free of charge.
It is necessary to promote the attraction of doctors with more financial support, so that dentists are interested in treating children, says Andis Paeglītis.
Specialist recommendations for parents of children’s dental health:
- Caring for a baby’s teeth begins during pregnancy by educating expectant mothers about the baby’s oral hygiene.
- Parents follow the eating habits of the family.
- Once a year you need a visit to the dentist, once a year to a hygienist – prevention is best for a child’s teeth.
- Work in the family – if the child sees that the family does not take care of dental hygiene, the child will not do it either.
- Brush your teeth twice a day – morning and evening.
- Until the age of 10, children’s teeth cleaning should be supervised and, if necessary, the child’s teeth should be cleaned.
- The best for teeth – regular hygiene, using a post with fluorite, only followed by various vitamins and mouthwashes.
