High-Scoring Game Sees Fischtown Pinguins Fall in Penalty Shootout but Remain DEL Table Leaders

The Fischtown Pinguins also lost the second game of the weekend, but still got a point with great morale at 5:6 after a penalty shootout at Düsseldorfer EG after a weak start. They remain DEL table leaders.

New signing Payerl scores after just 36 seconds

The Düsseldorfer EG had strengthened itself before the game with the former Augsburg player Adam Payerl (from EC Salzburg). And the striker only needed 36 seconds to report back to the DEL. He directed a shot from Sinan Akdag into the goal to give Düsseldorf the lead.

The league leaders from Bremerhaven found it difficult to get going after falling behind early on and even conceded 0-2 on a counterattack (9th minute).

Conrad shortens in the power play

After all: we could once again rely on the power play, which was extremely strong this season. Colt Conrad moved inside in the 18th minute and scored to make it 1-2.

Compared to the game against Cologne there was a change at the penguins. Nino Kinder, who was injured while blocking, was not there. Skyler McKenzie took over his position in the second forward.

The first highlight in the second third belonged to the Penguins. Miha Verlic directed a shot from Vladimir Eminger into the goal to make it 2-2 (25th).

In the power play, Adam Payerl blocked goalkeeper Gudlevskis so that Alexander Ehl was able to score to make it 3-2 (27′).

Superiority for Düsseldorf

In the 36th minute, the Penguins celebrated the supposed 3-3 equalizer by Felix Scheel, but the goal rightly didn’t count. The Penguins had six skaters on the ice. So instead of the equalizer there was a power play in Düsseldorf.

The Penguins survived unscathed, but DEG still managed to make it 4-2 in the second third. Kevin Clark was criminally exposed at the far post and directed Alexander Blank’s pass into the goal (39′).

Quick goal from Kälble

With a quick goal in the final third, the Penguins ensured that they still had a chance to score points. After Nicholas Jensen failed to hit the post (42nd), Lukas Kälble scored a little later to make it 3-4 (43rd).

Friesen and Wejse make it 5:5

The Penguins wanted to force the equalizer, but ran into a counterattack that Alexander Blank took advantage of to make it 5:3 (48th). But the Pinguins didn’t give up and Düsseldorf helped catch up. Alex Friesen only had to shoot in a bad pass from Kenny Agostino in front of his own goal to make it 4:5 (51′). And the Penguins use their second majority to equalize. Ziga Jeglic set up for Chris Wejse, who made it 5:5 (54th).

O’Donnell scores the winning goal in the penalty shootout

In overtime, the Penguins tried their trick of quickly changing players after winning the face-off, but it wasn’t quick enough. The referees ruled on too many players. However, the Bremerhaven team survived the Düsseldorf power play. There was a penalty shootout. Brendan O’Donnell was the only shooter to score, so the extra point went to Düsseldorfer EG.
