Geneva: Lawyer for convicted activist appeals – News Geneva: Geneva news

In Geneva, the journey before the justice of the young pro-climate activist found guilty of property damage for defiling the facade of the Swiss credit of red hands is not finished. Dissatisfied with this judgment rendered on Thursday, the lawyer for the member of the Breakfree collective appealed.

“This judgment is catastrophic,” Laïla Batou told Keystone-ATS on Friday. She objects to the fact that the Police Court did not recognize the imminence of the danger. The principle of subsidiarity should also have been better analyzed, according to Me Batou who had pleaded acquittal for the benefit of the state of necessity.

The 23-year-old activist was sentenced to a 10-day suspended fine of 30 francs and to pay 2,250 francs to the bank for cleaning costs in particular. On October 13, 2018, during the first big Climate March in Geneva, he had with a small group of demonstrators put his hands covered with red paint on the walls of the bank to symbolize the victims of global warming.

The Police Court considers that the action “red hands” was not necessary and did not prevent global warming. According to Me Batou, the youngster had only this means at his disposal to make his voice heard in the face of institutions that remain deaf to demonstrations in the street. The case will be dealt with by the Criminal Appeals and Review Chamber. (Ps / nxp)
