Former journalist Terry Verbiest dies at age 66

Terry Verbiest, the first editor-in-chief of TV Brussels, passed away on Thursday evening at the age of 66. That reports the Brussels news site bruzz Friday.

Terry Verbiest swam through many bodies of water. In the media world alone, he passed just about every house. As a journalist he contributes to Panorama in At the table on the VRT. At VTM he was editor-in-chief and presenter of Telefacts† For VT4 he was once director of information and presented without a trace† And at Woestijnvis he was editor-in-chief of Bonanzathe weekly that competes with In it had to go but it didn’t last a year.

For Bonanza and for VT4 Verbiest had earned his stripes at VTM and TV Brussel. After his start as a journalist at the then BRT, he witnessed the start-up of the VTM news service as the right-hand man of editor-in-chief Jan Schodts. He was allowed to do that again as editor-in-chief-director of TV Brussel. Verbiest started the Dutch-language regional station in the capital city in 1993 and stayed there for two years. He then made the switch to VT4, known today as Play4.

Some remember Verbiest mainly from the Radio 1 program the free west, which he presented on Radio 1 in the early 1990s together with Geertje De Ceuleneer. In 2017 he confessed on the same channel in the Gang of Annemie that he has his best memories of that period. He knew more. He said, for example, that he had completely read the literary passages from the much-loved column ‘a dialogue with world literature’ sucked his thumb.

After his media career, Verbiest started working as a communication manager for politicians Els Van Weert (Spirit) and Jurgen Verstrepen (Lijst De Decker). He also took care of communication with the Alfacam company and the SK Lierse football team.

Terry Verbiest had been hospitalized for a few months after surgery. He couldn’t get over it, he said bruzz.
