First thunderstorms reach the Netherlands, rain hinders motorists Inland

Around half past seven the first showers and thunderstorms reached South Limburg and North Brabant. Strong showers are also expected in the middle and west of the country, Weeronline reports. A lot of rain falls locally in a short time. As a result, some places may experience flooding.

Weerplaza warns: “The showers that now pass over Brabant in particular are considerable. Heavy wind gusts, a lot of rain, hail and thunder in a short time. Everything is possible.”

Fallen trees are reported in Tilburg.

Traffic

On the A58 at junction Batadorp, the sun has also given way to heavy rainfall. Rijkswaterstaat says on Twitter: “Driving in heavy rain can be unpleasant, but we do not recommend stopping on the hard shoulder.”

There are also traffic jams from Zandvoort because beachgoers return home.

Weerplaza advises people to keep a close eye on the showers. “It is important to check the rain radar regularly, because a cumulus can develop into a heavy shower in an hour.”

Friday June 26 will provisionally go down as the hottest day of the year so far. It was especially hot in the southeast of the country. The highest temperature, however, was measured in Hoek van Holland. There, the mercury rose to 32.3 degrees, Weeronline reports. In De Bilt it remained slightly cooler at 30.1 degrees.

On Tuesday it became warm for the first time in summer and then some even warmer days followed. Locally, the first tropical day of the year was a fact on Wednesday. In Arcen in Limburg, the thermometer tapped 31.3 degrees. Thursday was tropical warm again and Friday the first official tropical day was recorded in De Bilt. Due to the high humidity, it is a lot more sultry on Friday than previous days.

During the weekend, rain and thunderstorms come in from the southwest and the heat is over for the time being. An official heat wave is therefore not there. However, the south still has a chance of a regional heat wave. For this it must be at least 25 degrees on Saturday.

Tropical night

Tonight it will be cloudy again. As a result, the heat cannot enter the atmosphere and the earth does not cool down. Due to the showers, there is also a lot of moisture in the air. “In some places it is damp with a minimum of 20 degrees and we can speak of a tropical night, just like last night.”
