The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has approved a bill banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035.

From 2035, new cars will no longer be allowed to emit CO2, which means that combustion engines will be taboo from that moment on. Existing cars may continue to drive, but from that moment on, only new hydrogen-powered cars and purely electric cars with a battery will be allowed.

Synthetic fuel cars will also be banned, although they are technically carbon neutral because they are made with CO2 taken from the air. Because many car brands invest heavily in this type e-fuels, there is a chance that something will change in this regard.

The latter seems particularly obvious because in many countries the charging structure and the energy network are still far from being equipped to switch to electric driving. There will be another vote of the entire European Parliament and of the Council of Europe. Car manufacturers hope that eventually the choice will be made to reduce emissions by ‘only’ 90 percent.
