Elon Musk deploys Starlink for “unaffiliated schools” and “environmental monitoring” Amazon | internet

In November, the Brazilian government said it was negotiating with SpaceX to roll out satellite internet over the Amazon rainforest to track down illegal deforestation. Starlink also offers residents of areas that are barely served by fixed and mobile networks, high-speed internet via thousands of small satellites.

However, since President Bolsonaro came to power, the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest has increased sharply. His government is accused of promoting impunity. A study by the NGO Mapbiomas shows that government environmental protection services have intervened in less than three percent of deforestation alerts by satellites of the surveillance system in place. The president mainly sees economic potential in the Amazon forest and wants to open it up for agriculture, mining and energy production.
