The leader of the Social Democrats in the district council, Holger Grießhammer, is concerned about the financial situation of the smaller municipalities as well as that of the district. “The tried-and-tested stabilization aids that we as a district are demanding seem to be on the way out for the state government.” On the one hand, he is therefore happy that the district surcharge can remain at the previous level, on the other hand he is annoyed at the ever-increasing hurdles for the Free State’s stabilization aids. “Thanks to the aid, the municipalities have been able to reduce a lot of debt in recent years, but have only invested little in infrastructure. Unfortunately, the impression arises that the state government has still not recognized the actual problem: Due to the structural change, we have an immense investment backlog and, compared to many financially strong municipalities, a low tax revenue.
