Cross the Brooklyn Bridge for reproductive rights

A massive march supported the reproductive rights of women and among those present, Paula Ávila encouraged them to fight for their rights and not lower their guard against those who seek to take them away without any justification.

“I always fought in Latin America because we had oppressive governments, but I never thought it could happen here. But here we are, we are going to resist because no one has the right to choose for us how to live our lives,” Ávila said.

Marchers crossed the Brooklyn Bridge until they reached Downtown Manhattan.

Armed with hundreds of banners and T-shirts with clear messages: from keep abortions safe and legal, to gigantographs of the justices of the Supreme Court with a conservative majority, who are considering revoking the 1973 ruling in favor of the right to abortion.

Michel González, one of the attendees commented on this: “There is no balance, I do not see that there are 3 women, 3 men. Only men want to contradict what only women should decide.” While for Paola Mendoza, another attendee: “It is what is happening in the Supreme Court that they are taking away our right to have an abortion, the question is we want safe abortions.”

Protests against the possibility of annulling the right to abortion occur nationwide. In New York, thousands crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, joined by Senator Chuck Schumer, Mayor Eric Adams and other big-name politicians.

Mayor Eric Adams was present at the march.

For several days there has been discomfort and indignation at the leaked draft, whose content would eliminate the ruling that regulates the constitutional right to abortion in the country.

In practice, the repeal of said law would suppose the freedom of the states to decide on the reproductive rights of at least 166 million women.

“It bothers me a lot that we have to fight for this at the first moment, our rights, our bodies,” said another of the participants.

Last week several local politicians were outraged with the draft that came to light; Senator Schumer indicated that they will not allow women to be deprived of the right they have earned for almost 50 years.
