The WHO celebrates its annual assembly with the great challenge of leaving the pandemic behind

The World Health Organization (WHO) opens its 75th annual assembly tomorrow with the challenge of ending the “state of emergency” in which he has worked since the beginning of the 2020 pandemic and take on new challenges when this is over, including trying to prevent a similar crisis from repeating itself.

Until May 28, the heads of health of the 194 member countries will review the actions of the last year at the Palais des Nations, the European headquarters of the UN, and will set goals for the following ones, in the first assembly to be held in person since the start of the pandemic.

Although the WHO is expected to maintain the international emergency due to COVID-19 at least until July (month in which the committee in charge of prolonging that situation or putting an end to it is scheduled to meet), the general director of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced this week that will be a topic of debate.

“We will discuss how to end the emergency, among other things by increasing access to vaccines, antivirals and other essential tools”pointed out Tedros, who maintains the objective that in July it will be possible for all countries have managed to inoculate at least 70% of their populations the COVID-19 vaccine.
