Coronavirus May 30. 9,779 people died from Covid-19 in Mexico; they total 87 thousand 512 cases

Authorities of the Ministry of Health reported this Saturday, May 30, that 9,779 people died in the country due to Covid-19, in addition to 87 thousand 512 accumulated confirmed cases

The federal government’s proposal to establish a traffic light to “order” the start of the so-called “new normal” at the national level, in the face of the Covid-19 health emergency, and the refusal of some governments to abide by it, revealed the different speeds in which the pandemic is moving in the country.

For weeks the federal government announced the end of the so-called Sana Distancia Day for next Monday, June 1; However, the date is approaching a time when the country registers the highest number of cases of infections and with figures of between 400 and 500 deaths per day from coronavirus.

In this context, the discussion focuses on the restart of activities from next Monday, although the reality is that in several cities, mainly in the center of the country —Aguascalientes and León, to give an example—, businesses have been open for for at least a week. In others, like Chilpancingo, Guerrero, they never completely left.

The traffic light presented by the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, considers all states in red (maximum risk), with the exception of Zacatecas, which is orange (high risk).

It also reads: “The level of cynicism of López-Gatell is incredible”: Governor of Jalisco

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador recalled that these are general guidelines, so if a governor decides not to attend to them, “we would tell you to follow your path, you will be responsible to your people.”

The differences between the federal and state government criteria were made clear last Wednesday, when the Interior Secretary, Olga Sánchez Cordero, announced that the federal traffic light would govern the reopening in the country, which generated protests from several governors. A day later, the official clarified: the traffic light will be in charge of the Federation, but it will have a regional character, depending on the situation in each state.

Yesterday, the governors Jaime Rodríguez Calderón, from Nuevo León; Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís, from Coahuila; Silvano Aureoles Conejo, from Michoacán; José Rosas Aispuro, from Durango; Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, from Jalisco; Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca, from Tamaulipas, and José Ignacio Peralta, from Colima, expressed their rejection of the traffic light of the New Normality strategy.
