Coronavirus in Belgium: less than 90 carriers of the virus in intensive care

There are still 87 patients with Sars-CoV-2 being treated in intensive care and, more broadly, 1,238 in Belgian hospitals, according to figures from the Sciensano Public Health Institute updated on Tuesday morning. Between May 17 and May 23, there were an average of 78.9 hospital admissions per day due to covid, down 23% from the previous reporting period. Between May 14 and May 20, 2,392 new Sars-CoV-2 infections were detected on average per day, down 35% from the previous week.

Over the same period, 8.1 people died per day on average while they were carrying the virus (-11%), bringing the death toll to 31,710 since the start of the pandemic in Belgium.

Nearly 15,400 tests on average were also carried out daily, for a positivity rate of 17.4%.

The reproduction rate of the virus is 0.85. When it is less than 1, this indicator means that the epidemic tends to slow down. The incidence, which provides the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, reached 371 over 14 days.
