Medical oncologist Myrian Chalabi: “It is understandable that as a cancer patient you are particularly worried about your health today. In particular, patients receiving chemotherapy or immunotherapy can become sicker from the virus than healthy individuals. As medical specialists, we therefore try to limit the risks for patients as much as possible. In doing so, we weigh up the risks of a reduced immune system against the possible benefits that a treatment would yield.
“Consult with doctor more often by telephone or by video”
For example, your doctor may suggest that you take another course, skip a course, or delay treatment. This is only done if the medical specialists think that the cancer can still be treated properly. We also try to keep the number of hospital visits as small as possible in order to prevent the risk of contamination. This means that a consultation is more often conducted by telephone or video and checks are sometimes postponed. If it is medically justified, surgery may also be postponed. Your own medical specialist or nurse will discuss what this means for you and decide together what is best for you.
All medical specialists are always kept informed of the latest developments. As Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, we still treat and operate, but we do apply strict measures to keep the virus at bay. We have been able to agree with the hospitals in the region that corona patients who need treatment for this can go there, so that we keep room for the possible takeover of patients with cancer who need non-delayed care.
