Change the screen resolution of your smartphone

Many smartphones have a screen with full HD resolution. Whether the display of your device measures 5, 6 or 7 inches: full hd delivers a sharp display. Some of the expensive devices have a screen with so-called QHD resolution, with more pixels that therefore offer a sharper image. Sony sells a handful of premium smartphones with a 4K screen, such as the Xperia 1.

A resolution higher than full HD is especially useful when viewing photos, films and series. Provided that they have a higher resolution than full-HD, of course. For example, an old HD movie doesn’t look better. Because a QHD resolution or even 4K resolution consumes noticeably more power, various manufacturers offer the option to manually change the screen resolution of your smartphone. Android Planet explains how you do that.

Samsung

On your Samsung smartphone, go to the “Settings” and click on “Display”. You now choose the ‘Screen resolution’ setting. Click on this and you will see which screen resolutions are available for your smartphone.

There are usually two or three depending on your device. The full HD resolution is standard on Samsung smartphones; this resolution offers a good balance between sharp image and a long battery life.

Do you want a longer battery life? Then choose the hd + resolution, which lowers the image resolution and therefore extends the battery life. Keep in mind a less sharp image. You will notice this especially when reading text and watching videos. The QHD resolution offers even sharper images than full-HD, but therefore drains your battery faster.

Among others the Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S10 and Note 10 can change the resolution of the screen.

OnePlus

On OnePlus smartphones with a higher QHD resolution you can switch between the screen resolution in the settings. Among others the OnePlus 7 Pro and 7T Pro support this feature. Go to the “Settings”, click on “Screen” and choose “Resolution”. The full HD resolution offers sharp images and is better for the battery life, while the QHD resolution consumes more power and offers an even better image.

Because not all apps and games benefit from the QHD resolution, you can also set the smartphone to automatically switch between QHD and full HD. Your device therefore takes the battery consumption into account. If it is almost empty, the screen uses the more energy-efficient full HD resolution.

Huawei

You can change the screen resolution on some of the Huawei smartphones with Android 9.0 (Pie). The Huawei P30 Pro is one of those devices, as you can see on the screenshots below. Go to “Settings”, select “Display” and then “Screen resolution”. Now you can choose from different resolutions. In the case of the P30 Pro, there are two: the standard full HD resolution and a lower, more energy-efficient HD resolution.

You can also choose ‘Smart resolution’, after which the smartphone determines for itself at which times it shows full HD or HD. If your battery is low, your device switches to HD to save power. With a full battery you can enjoy the nicer full HD resolution.
