Could be, but I mainly see a pragmatic marketing department. It comes with two challenges and one chance.
1) The chance is to come across “woke” in a nice and cheap way. People do binge a lot on the internet, but the overwhelming majority of people (luckily!) Don’t care about racism, so it’s an easy statement to make.
2) The first challenge, you do get enough attention. The US market is important and if people / your target group are busy with other things, you will not get enough ROI for your marketing expenses. So hard commercial consideration.
3) The second challenge is the risk that if you persevere without any comment, your company / product will be seen as a “tone deaf”. Reputation is out of your control, it’s just a single retweet by a major influencer away from a lot of negative fuss. This costs energy anyway and you have little control over the results. This is therefore also classic risk management.
In short, this announcement is simply the marketing department that makes their money. As we ITers apply patches and updates, they choose the time and place of announcements.
