Police found the British millionaire daughter Grace Millane († 22) dead on December 9 in the New Zealand city of Aukland. She was killed by her Tinter date (28). Strangled during sex.
–
Now the Aukland court has convicted the perpetrator. The New Zealander receives life imprisonment for murder. He must be behind bars for at least 17 years.
–
Grace Millane disappeared the night before her 22nd birthday. She had only arrived in New Zealand a few days earlier – after completing her studies, the young woman wanted to travel around the world for a year.
–
Surveillance videos caught him
She met her murderer, 27 years old at the time, via the Tinder dating app. After they were in several bars together, Millane went home with the New Zealander, who the court judged killed them.
–
The defendant pleaded not guilty in the trial. He admitted that the young British woman had died in his apartment. However, his lawyers said Millane had asked the man to choke her during sexually agreed sex.
The jury unanimously found the man guilty in November after only five hours of consultation. The killer has shown no sympathy for Millane, who put her trust in a stranger on her trip to an unknown city, judge Simon Moore said on Friday. “You are a tall and strong man, she was petite,” he said. “You were in a position of complete physical superiority.”
–
The judge described the killer’s actions as “spoiled”. After Millane’s death, the 28-year-old had taken photos of her body, watched porn and arranged the next Tinder date.
–
A life sentence in New Zealand lasts at least ten years. However, the judge went beyond this, as he saw no circumstances that would justify a reduction in detention.
–
«Unspeakable deed»
Millane’s family spoke to the court on video before the verdict was pronounced. Her brother Declan described Grace as a wonderful person. «You tore our family apart and what for? There is no reason for this unspeakable act, »he said to the accused.
–
Her mother Gillian, clutching a photo of her daughter, said she had lost her best friend.
–
The death of the young backpacker had rocked New Zealand, which is actually considered a safe travel destination. There were vigils for Millane across the country. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern asked forgiveness of Millane’s family. (HI)
