Brightest comet seen in a quarter of a century

Comet Neowise is so close to the Sun this month that it can be seen from Earth. This was the first time in the Netherlands last night, because the weather was clear.

Neowise can be seen until mid-August, but not always with the naked eye. “Now the comet is close to the sun. Then part of it evaporates and that is clearly visible,” says science journalist Govert Schilling. “The comet will become less visible in the coming weeks. Maybe in two weeks you will only be able to see it with binoculars.”

This week it was cloudy at night, but last night there was a first good opportunity to see neowise. Schilling set his alarm clock at 3.15 a.m. A trained eye is not necessary, he says: “It is clear to everyone where to look. The comet is just blurrier than a real star and you see the tail of course.”
